Apprentice of the year finalist, Telford and Wrekin Colleges
Congratulations to Drayton Gasson, a finalist for Apprentice of the Year

We are delighted to let you know that Drayton Gasson of Fowler and Gilbert has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Construction category at the 2026 Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Apprenticeship Awards.

Drayton first visited Fowler and Gilbert in his final year of High School when he undertook a work experience placement with the company.

Drayton explained, “This was my first real introduction to the world of work and to the metal fabrication industry. Initially, adapting to the demands and expectations of a workshop environment was challenging, but with guidance and support from experienced colleagues, I quickly gained confidence and began contributing to day-to-day operations.”

Managing Director Lee Gilbert, recognised Drayton’s potential and upon completion of his work experience placement, Lee offered Drayton the opportunity to return as an apprentice after finishing school.

Through dedication and a willingness to learn, Drayton established himself as a dependable member of the team and developed a strong understanding of the high standards expected within the company.
Alongside workplace learning, college studies played a significant role in his development. The theoretical knowledge he gained provided a deeper understanding of materials, engineering principles, and fabrication methods, enabling him to apply classroom learning directly to practical situations.

A significant milestone in my apprenticeship came when my supervisor left the business. This created a need for someone to step into a leadership role, and I was trusted to take on this responsibility,” explained Drayton. “Through the skills, knowledge, and confidence I had developed throughout my apprenticeship, I was able to successfully lead the workshop team, coordinate workloads, and maintain the high standards expected by Fowler & Gilbert Ltd.”

Today, Drayton leads the in-house fabrication team at Fowler and Gilbert, working closely with a dedicated group of colleagues to deliver quality workmanship, support continuous improvement, and ensure projects are completed efficiently and to the highest standard.

Lee Gilbert explained ” Drayton has become a key member of our team at Fowler and Gilbert. It has been a pleasure to watch him grow into his role with confidence and mature into a dependable leader with a strong skillset. We are proud of all that Drayton has achieved so far and we look forward to seeing his future career blossom.”

From all of us at Fowler and Gilbert we wish you luck at the awards evening Drayton, you would be a very worthy winner of Apprentice of the Year. Well done for the recognition of being shortlisted for the award.
